Hands-on pathology training for veterinarians in Spain - learning that makes a difference
On April 21 at the CREBA Institute of the University of Lleida and on April 22, 2026, at the University of Veterinary Medicine Zaragoza, our Spanish colleague Jordi Serra Martínez organized two intensive pathology training courses for a total of 17 herd veterinarians.
After an in-depth theoretical introduction covering animal selection, targeted sampling, correct sample handling, and appropriate diagnostic and differential diagnostic approaches, participants moved on to the post-mortem room in small groups.
Here, they practiced cross-contamination-free sampling techniques for the investigation of streptococcal meningitis, polyserositis, and arthritis in growing pigs, guided by experienced instructors.
A strong practical focus was placed on the consistent sterilization of the sampling area using a gas burner prior to each incision - an approach that generated both keen interest and enthusiasm among the participants. The highlight followed at the end, when each veterinarian
received their own SAN Vet gas burner for future on-farm sampling.
The approximately six-hour training program was rounded off by: a theoretical session on ANIVAC vaccines, presented by Ines Spiekermeier, covering pathogen selection,laboratory-based options, and possible vaccination schemes, and an overview of the regulatory framework for
autogenous vaccines under EU and Spanish law, given by Klaus Teich.
The consistently positive feedback encourages us to continue offering practical, interactive training formats in the future.
