AI-Based Analysis of Animal Welfare and Animal Health in Livestock Farming
The REWE GROUP and Competence Center for Agriculture, together with Max Esser-Geneschen and additional partners from agricultural practice, has launched a research project exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in livestock farming. In collaboration with Dr. Stefanie Retz (trafo:agrar/University of Vechta), Prof. Dr. Diana Meemken (University of Berlin), the University of Veterinary Medicine Foundation Hannover, Johannes Schmidt-Moosing (VetVise GmbH) and the German Veterinary Society for Animal Welfare (TVT), represented by Prof. Dr. Thomas Blaha and Dr. Andreas Franzky, the project investigates how AI-supported camera and sensor technology can help monitor animal welfare and animal health in pig and poultry farming in an objective and early-stage manner. The aim is to scientifically assess both the potential and the limitations of this technology under real farming conditions and to generate robust insights for its future application in agriculture. Responsibility for animal welfare remains with humans at all times. The research project will be presented as part of the event.
