Research Officer
Teagasc - Agriculture and Food Development Authority
Neil Joseph Tirchett is an animal scientist specialising in sustainable livestock production and animal welfare, with a particular focus on pig production systems. He holds an MSc in Animal Science from Wageningen University & Research, specialising in Global and Sustainable Production.
Neil has experience across research, animal welfare policy and applied livestock production, including work with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Maltese Ministry for Agriculture and Teagasc - Ireland. At Teagasc, he is working as a Research Officer within the Pig & Poultry Research and Knowledge Transfer Department and is closely involved in the coordination of the EU-funded WelFarmers project, an EU-wide network supporting the uptake of practical innovations and good practices for improved pig welfare.
His interests focus on bridging science, farming practice and policy to support practical and sustainable improvements in pig welfare.

European pig production is facing increasing expectations for improved animal welfare, while farmers must ensure that changes remain technically, economically and environmentally feasible. The EU-funded WelFarmers project used a bottom-up, multi-actor approach across eight European countries to identify and evaluate practical good practices for pig welfare. This presentation will introduce the WelFarmers methodology and showcase selected practices across four priority themes: loose housing of lactating sows, undocked tails, reduction of pain during castration, and space allowance & flooring. The project’s practical resources for knowledge transfer and farm-level uptake will also be presented.
