The feed industry continues to explore alternative protein sources for young animal diets. Joosten – young animal nutrition developed FMR Ω3, a processed vegetable protein source containing omega-3 fatty acids. For broilers, the starter phase is an important period for establishing early growth and efficient feed utilisation. In this experimental broiler trial the effects of FMR Ω 3 on the performance of broilers were studied.
Studying performance during the starter phase
The trial involved 88 day-old female Ross 308 broilers, divided into two treatment groups with 11 replicate pens per group.
The control group received a commercial basal diet. The experimental group received a diet containing 5% FMR Ω3 during the starter period, from day 1 to day 14. Performance was monitored until day 36, including body weight, daily growth, feed intake and feed conversion ratio.
Higher growth and improved feed conversion
During the starter period, broilers receiving FMR Ω3 showed a significantly higher daily growth rate: 35.7 grams compared with 34.4 grams in the control group, an improvement of 3.8%.
At day 14, average body weight was also significantly higher, reaching 508.6 grams compared with 492.6 grams in the control group.
Feed conversion ratio improved significantly from 1.113 to 1.093, meaning less feed was required per unit of weight gain during the starter phase.
Understanding the results over the full production period
The significant improvements were observed during the first 14 days. Over the full trial period, from day 1 to day 36, differences in body weight and growth were in the advantage of the FMR Omega 3 group but not statistically significant
These results clearly demonstrate the potential of FMR Ω3 to support early growth and feed utilisation in broiler starter diets.
