Saltwater Aquaponics I – Indoor hydroponic cultivation of the salt-tolerant food plant Sea Asparagus coupled with Gilthead Seabream farming

The FishPlant project investigated coupling gilthead seabream production in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) with indoor cultivation of Salicornia (sea asparagus), using nutrient-rich aquaculture water as the basis for plant nutrition. The project developed suitable water-treatment and lighting strategies and an integrated production concept. Trials showed that aeroponic Salicornia cultivation is feasible and can be coupled with sea bream production if the water is diluted and supplemented with macronutrients. Lighting spectra with at least 20% infrared radiation proved important for economic viability. Results indicate strong potential for resource-efficient production.
