High-energy silage of optimal fermentation quality is a prerequisite for successful dairy cattle feeding and for high biogas yields. The construction of silage facilities must therefore follow the principles of fermentation biology (anaerobic conditions with optimal compaction) while also meeting environmental protection requirements. Due to its strong oxygen-depleting effect, silage effluent can impair surface water and groundwater. Since 2018, the nationwide Ordinance on Installations for Handling Water-Polluting Substances (AwSV) has also applied to JGS installations (liquid manure, slurry and silage effluent). The practical implementation of the ordinance is described in a technical code of practice (TRwS 792 DWA), which is currently being revised. The presentation covers the most important legal requirements as well as the upcoming changes.
